Program » Plenary Speakers

Distinguished plenary leaders will engage in live dialogue with each other, while preparing the audience in advance with pre-recorded talks. The virtual conference format offers a unique opportunity to bring multiple global visionaries together simultaneously, so the audience can hear them exchange ideas on how future transducers research can address global challenges. Audience members can also suggest questions in advance of the event, after reviewing pre-recorded talks, and vote on the most urgent topics to address in the discussion.

Opportunities for Transducers in Global Good
Panel speakers Audrey Tang and Andrea Renda will discuss their respective visions of opportunities for the transducers community to address global challenges in social and environmental progress. Professor Hiroyuki Fujita will moderate.

DIGITAL TECHNOLOGY MEETS ETHICS: HOW TO THINK ABOUT THE GLOBAL GOOD WHEN YOU ARE CHANGING THE WORLD
Andrea Renda
Centre for European Policy Studies (CEPS), BELGIUM
Show Description Hide Description
Innovation and digital technology are changing the world every day, bit by bit. Innovations in domains like the Internet of Things and Artificial intelligence are our best bet for sustainability and prosperity, and our reliance on them (especially after the pandemic) cannot be overstated. At the same time, these technologies must be handled with care, since they can lead to concerns and risks related to discrimination, excess energy consumption, problems with safety and security. This talk shows how governments around the world are trying to embed sustainability and ethical alignment in the policy framework for digital technologies: an endeavour that critically requires dialogue with the innovation community.

DIGITAL SOCIAL INNOVATION: TAIWAN CAN HELP
Audrey Tang
Digital Minister, TAIWAN
Show Description Hide Description
When we see "internet of things", let's make it an internet of beings.
When we see "virtual reality", let's make it a shared reality.
When we see "machine learning", let's make it collaborative learning.
When we see "user experience", let's make it about human experience.
When we hear "the singularity is near", let us remember: the Plurality is here.

Opportunities for Transducers in Healthcare
Panel speaker Dan Wattendorf, together with transducers leaders Professors John Rogers and Axel Scherer will discuss their respective visions of opportunities for the transducers community to revolutionize medicine. Professor Ellis Meng will moderate.

A BAYESIAN FRAMEWORK FOR HEALTH MEASUREMENT ACROSS THE LIFESPAN
Dan Wattendorf
Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, USA
Show Description Hide Description
New devices that measure biophysical and biochemical parameters in time series or continuously are emerging. The MEMS community has developed sensors that are leading to devices suitable for measurement outside of clinical facilities. Many of these devices offer new measurements of health status with high analytical performance. The predictive value, adoption, and individual and epidemiological impact will require a digital system capable of embedding the missing context--individual and geographical priors. This Bayesian architecture will enable multiple innovations for health metrology to yield actionable predictions.
