Helmholtz Zentrum Berlin (HZB) is a world-class centre for energy and functional material research offering large-scale infrastructures for an international scientific community and to industry. HZB is part of the largest research organisation in Germany, the Helmholtz Association. HZB coordinates its research programme with other Helmholtz Centres, focusing our resources primarily on energy materials and accelerator development.

The mission of HZB is to understand, improve, and develop new energy materials, to research complex systems of materials for energy transition, energy storage, and energy efficiency; to operate the BESSY II accelerator-based photon source in the spectral regions from THZ/infrared to soft X-ray radiation for an international user community, and to operate the BER II neutron source until the end of 2019.

Beyond the international user community at the BESSY II and BER II large-scale facilities, HZB collaborates at the international level with 23 partner institutions from 17 countries in research, technological development, and in the exchange of scientific and technical personnel. HZB has developed several forms of cooperation with regional teaching and research institutions, including joint research laboratories, research teams, projects, and Young Investigator Groups. Many HZB scientists are engaged in teaching at universities.

Researchers from HZB participate in large EU projects, such as achieving a technological breakthrough in the generation of solar fuels. There are many collaborative projects with non-European institutions, such as Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility in the U.S.A., Budker Institute in Russia, ANSTO in Australia, and Weizmann Institute in Isarel.

The Ferdinand-Braun-Institut, Leibniz-Institut fuer Hoechstfrequenztechnik (FBH) researches electronic and optical components, modules and systems based on compound semiconductors. These devices are key enablers that address the needs of today's society in fields like communications, energy, health, and mobility. Applications range from medical technology, high-precision metrology and sensors to optical communications in space. The FBH is a competence center for III-V compound semiconductors and has a strong international reputation. In close cooperation with industry, its research results lead to cutting-edge products. The institute offers its international customer base complete solutions and know-how as a one-stop agency - from design to ready-to-use modules and prototypes.

The Laser Sensors Lab at FBH specifically develops diode laser based light sources tailored for sensor and analytic applications. This includes wavelength-stabilized, narrowband emitting diode lasers and diode laser systems. These light sources are suitable for many demanding applications such as Raman, fluorescence and absorption spectroscopy. Shifted Excitation Raman Difference Spectroscopy (SERDS), for example, is a powerful and easy-to-use spectroscopic tool that separates the desired Raman signals from disturbing background interferences. Due to their compact size, FBH modules and systems suitable for SERDS bring Raman spectroscopy out of the lab, thus enabling real-world applications. In-house developed, portable Raman systems have already been successfully used for measurements on food, plants and human skin.

The Scientific Visit will start with a brief presentation providing a general overview of the institute followed by guided tours around the cleanroom facilities and through the Laser Sensors Labs.

Fraunhofer IZM is one the world's leading institutes for applied research and the development and system integration of robust and reliable electronics.

For over 25 years, more than 230 institute researchers have been finding technological solutions in cooperation with partners from industry and academia. Emerging challenges are addressed in branches such as automotive and industrial electronics, medical engineering, ICT and semiconductor technology.

As part of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, Fraunhofer IZM specializes in applied and industrial contract research. Fraunhofer IZM's focus is on packaging technology and the integration of multifunctional electronics into systems.

The institute has a staff of more than 233 and saw a turnover of 30.2 million Euros in 2017, of which 46.7 percent was earned through contract research. Fraunhofer IZM has two sites in Germany. Apart from its headquarter near Berlin Mitte, the institute is also represented in Dresden, a strategically important center for electronic development and manufacturing.

The four Fraunhofer IZM departments promote internationally cutting-edge technology development. The departments jointly work on application areas and key development topics, ensuring the research is advanced across technologies. In key development topics, Fraunhofer IZM researchers monitor and develop highly promising research questions, paving the way for future projects with industry.

Here, Fraunhofer IZM benefits from its close cooperation with the Technische Universität Berlin and other scientific institutes. Fraunhofer IZM has cooperated on highly productive preliminary research with TU Berlin since its establishment, and the close relationship between institute and university is best illustrated by the current practice of appointing a joint IZM institute head and TU university professorship.
